In 2019 The Nederburg Auction, which was originally conceived in 1975, evolved into the Cape Fine & Rare Wine Auction. The Nederburg Auction’s establishment is inextricably linked with Nederburg’s signature dessert wine, Edelkeur (“Noble Choice”), pioneered and created in 1969 by Günter Brözel, Nederburg’s cellarmaster for 33 years until his retirement in 1989. At the first auction the 1973 and 1974 vintages of the Nederburg Edelkeur were auctioned alongside wines from Delheim, Groot Constantia, Simonsig and Overgaauw. The average price per case achieved for the collection of 15 wines sold was R19.21.
In 2019 the Nederburg Auction evolved into the Cape Fine & Rare Wine Auction, an exciting new chapter in the auctions history. For the first time in its 44 year's it will be moving from Nederburg in Paarl to the Rupert Museum in Stellenbosch.

In the beginningConsidered to be the single most important event for the renaissance of the wine industry in the Cape, the Nederburg Auction is created to serve as an incentive to higher wine standards in South Africa, to develop an awareness of premium Cape wines, and to ensure a fair distribution of rare wines. Inspired by events such as Kloster Eberbach and the Hospice de Beaune, and advocated by Lothar Barth, then managing director of SFW, and Jürgen Burmeister, marketing director, the first Auction takes place on 8 March 1975 with five participating wineries and a total of 15 wines on offer. Source: A Magic Blend. SFW 1925 - 2000, Romi van der Merwe The Nederburg Auction is also a platform to sell the Nederburg Edelkeur ("Noble Choice"), the brand’s signature dessert wine, created by former Nederburg cellarmaster, Günter Brözel. “Lunch at the very first Nederburg Auction was a simple affair. Boerewors rolls eaten at trestle tables on the lawn was as elegant as it got”, remembers the visionary Michael ‘Spatz’ Sperling of Delheim, one of the five original producers to participate at the inaugural event.First SA Wine AuctionCyril Back from Fairview, together with his wife Beryl, successfully bottled their own wine for the first time in 1974, and initiated the Cape’s first public wine auction as a vehicle to market the fledgling Fairview wines. Their first auction, by all accounts, was a success but never transpired into more than just the first auction. |
